La Fe Sweetened Condensed Milk Can, label removed
Begin by placing the La Fe Sweetened Condensed Milk Can with the label removed on its side in a large pot.
Following this, fill the pot with room temperature water. Make sure to fill the pot so that the water level is 2-inches above the can.
Now set the pot over high heat and allow the water to come to a simmer.
Once the water is brought to a simmer, reduce the heat and simmer for 2-3 hours. 2 hour simmer yields a lighter dulce de leche. 3 hour simmer yields a thicker and darker dulce de leche. Make sure to check the pot every 30 minutes to make sure that the water level stays above the can.
Once finished simmering, use a pair of tongs to remove the can from the pot and set aside to cool. Making sure to not open the cans prematurely.
Once cooled, open the can and scoop out the Dulce de Leche. Reheat, the scooped Dulce in a double boiler to soften the Dulce for a more spreadable consistency.
You can place all unused Dulce de Leche in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks and that any extra unopened cans of Dulce De Leche can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 months.
